Season 2 corrections before comparing the rifles
AK74 now starts unlocked with its 30-round magazine; its published purchase price is $800. M4 access moved to Assault 28 with a $150,000 one-time fee. Its older $2,800 purchase price is not newly verified here.
Reviewed . The comparison below is Patch 0.11 history, not current damage or recoil testing. Use the version-labelled weapon database and your vendor quote.
Quick answer
AK74 for value; M4 for faster fire after the economy is stable.
- Choose the AK74 when repeatable lives and an early unlock matter most.
- Choose the M4 when you can absorb the higher unlock and per-life cost.
- Budget ammunition, magazines and attachments separately.
- Confirm live values in the vendor after every balance patch.
This is not an official developer stat sheet. The values are cross-checked community data for Patch 0.11.
AK74 vs M4: historical Patch 0.11 values
The M4's recorded rate of fire is 150 RPM higher and its listed damage is 2 points higher. Those numbers do not include ammunition behavior, armor, hit location, recoil, attachments or the player's accuracy.
Which rifle fits the job?
Early progression and repeatable pressure
The lower role gate and lower purchase price leave more cash for ammunition, medical basics and replacement lives. It is the safer economic default while learning routes.
Higher fire rate with a larger cash buffer
The M4 becomes easier to justify when Infantry progression and income are already stable and close-to-mid-range pressure matters more than minimizing each loss.
The weapon price is not the deploy price
- Add compatible ammunition and enough magazines for the intended fight.
- Compare attachments by the problem they solve, not by rarity.
- Keep armor and medical basics inside the same loss budget.
- Use Re-buy Loadout to inspect the full repeat cost before confirming.
Even if the recorded base prices are correct, a heavily modified AK74 can cost more than a restrained M4 build. Compare the final vendor total, not only the rifle row.
